About Our Club

The Smith College Investment Club (formerly the Smith Student Investment Club) was launched in fall 2002 under the sponsorship of the Center for Women & Financial Independence (WFI). SCIC has grown to be one of the premier student organizations at Smith through its extraordinary talent of its members and unique resources bestowed by the generosity of private donors.

The mission of the club is twofold: to provide its members with a unique educational opportunity for hands-on experience with investment management, and to make a positive financial contribution to the Smith community. In a post-financial crisis world, the resources and guidance SCIC provides its members have never been more important. Weekly workshops and a sector-specific training for new members allow students to hone their valuation skills and understanding while bi-monthly stock pitches provide a space for those practical skills to be tested.

SCIC student members are responsible for managing and investing an endowment portfolio of over $160,000. Club members meet on a regular basis to discuss asset allocation, analyze fund performance and decide how to successfully operate a well-diversified portfolio. Dividends are donated to Smith College Financial Aid (75%), and the remaining is allocated to the Student Government Association (25%) for campus-wide activities.

SCIC has been managing Smith's only undergraduate real money investment portfolio consistently for the past 12 years. Through all aspects of our organization, we take pride in the professionalism of our operations and the knowledge and experience our members gain through the process of stock valuation. We aim to continue our prudent management and foster our dedicated membership in the coming years while providing access to career opportunities in the investment industry.

SCIC sponsors on-campus lectures by financial professionals and off-campus trips to Wall Street and beyond, and is open to all interested students.

The current faculty advisor for the club is Professor Mahnaz Mahdavi and René Heavlow.
